Veggie Gardening in the Mid-Atlantic Coast US

Have you noticed I'm on a roll lately with info from Mother Earth News?  I am in no way being compensated for sharing this information with you...Unless you buy heirloom seeds from Mary's Heirloom Seeds.  But as for the magazine, I just LOVE their info!!!

According to Mother Earth News, the top 10 crops for the Mid-Atlantic coast are:
Slicing tomato, Sweet pepper, Cherry tomato, Pole snap bean, Bush snap bean, Garlic, Potato, Snow/snap pea, Summer squash, Bulb onion

February is a great time to start seeds for your garden, although most need warmth so it's best to plant indoors if possible.  Seed varieties include:
Artichoke, Arugula, Asparagus, Broccoli, Cabbage, Celery, Chard, Eggplant, Beans, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce, Onions, Peppers, Radicchio, Spinach, Turnips and HERBS!

My advice to anyone getting started:
-Plant ONLY Heirloom Seeds.  Find out why...
-Plant Basil!!!  It's easy.
-More easy varieties are: lettuce, beets, radish, turnips and borage.
-Plant more seeds than you think you'll need.  Stuff happens!
-Take notes or keep a log of what works, what didn't work, questions and comments.  Or blog about it!

If you have not done so already, read my posts (3) on Companion Planting.  Companion planting will help keep away "bad" bugs, encourage "good" bugs and might save your veggies.  Trust me...I lost 3 entire cucumber plants to aphids my first time around!

If you are looking for additional help for natural or organic pest control check out "Natural and Organic Pest Control." I use Neem Oil for powdery mildew when I just can't get rid of it any other way.
