Heirloom Tomatoes

If you read "The Wonderful World of Heirloom Seeds" then you know that I'll be sharing about different and unique heirloom seed varieties.

An heirloom seed variety has been saved and passed down from generation to generation. These seeds have been carefully cultivated and are considered a great value to the recipient. Some say an heirloom variety is 50 years old or more.  Some heirloom varieties have been passed down for over 100 years and others for over 400 years.

Heirloom Seeds can be very unique like the Lemon Cucumber and others are just like the produce you buy in the store (only tastier) like the Roma Tomato.

On to the Heirloom Tomatoes!

I already shared the Amana's Orange Tomato.  Next up is

CHEROKEE PURPLE TOMATO
80 days. Indeterminate. An old Cherokee Indian heirloom, pre-1890 variety; beautiful deep dusky purple-pink color, superb sweet flavor, and very large sized fruit. Cherokee Purple tomatoes are beefsteak in style.

EMERALD GREEN TOMATO
80 days.  (Lycopersicon esculentum)  Indeterminate. Medium-large fruit that stay "evergreen". This heirloom variety was introduced by Glecklers Seedsmen around 1950. The large plants set heavy yields of these beauties having lovely lime-green color. The flavor is rich and superbly sweet.

GERMAN LUNCHBOX TOMATO
70-80 days. A great tomato begins with high-quality, heirloom seeds!
The fruit are the size of a small egg, vibrant pink, sugar sweet, and begging to be eaten. Perfectly sized for salads or putting in the lunchbox!

GOLDEN JUBILEE TOMATO
70-80 days. A very popular orange variety; fine, sweet, mild flavor; good size and yield.   An old standard and Oh-So-Beautiful!

PINK OXHEART TOMATO
85 days.  Vigorous vines produce large bunches of huge pink tomatoes in the shape of an oxheart.  Tomatoes are very meaty and flavorful.  Popular with old timers, a good all-purpose variety.  Great for processing or sliced for a sandwich.

RIESENTRAUBE TOMATO
80 days.  Plant produces extremely heavy yields of 1" red cherry tomatoes. Tomatoes are very flavorful. Grows in cluster of 20 to 40 tomatoes. Name translates to "Giant Bunch of Grapes". Excellent for making tomato wine. Grown by Pennsylvania Dutch as early as 1856. A heirloom from Germany.

There are so many more heirloom tomato seed varieties!
These are just a few of my favorite!

Heirloom Peppers

If you read "The Wonderful World of Heirloom Seeds" then you know that I'll be sharing about different and unique heirloom seed varieties.

Heirloom Seeds can be very unique like the Lemon Cucumber and others are just like the produce you buy in the store (only tastier) like the Roma Tomato.

On to the Heirloom Peppers!

I already shared the PURPLE JALAPENO.  Next up is

BLACK HUNGARIAN PEPPER
75 days.  Rare and colorful, these tall plants have beautiful purple flowers that make this variety very ornamental.  They are mildly hot and have a delicious flavor.

CHINESE 5-COLOR PEPPER
70-90 days.  Screaming hot little peppers turn a rainbow of vibrant colors; from purple, cream, yellow, orange to red as they ripen.
A beautiful ornamental!   The plants are great for containers inside. Just pick a few any time to liven up your salsa.

CHOCOLATE HABANERO PEPPER

75-95 days.  Gorgeous chocolate colored habanero peppers.
Don’t let the color fool you; these are not candy, but rather flaming-hot fruit that carry a massive 300,000 Scoville units of heat!

GOLDEN MARCONI PEPPER
80 days.  This golden sweet pepper is worth the wait!  Fruits start green and change to yellow, then orangish. Sweetest when fully ripe, but still mild and lightly sweet at the yellow stage.

RED MARCONI PEPPER
90 days.  This variety matures a little later than regular bell peppers but produces much sweeter and tastier fruits.  Vigorous plants produce high yields of high quality fruits that ripen to a deep red color.

JIMMY NARDELLO PEPPER
75-85 days.  A very productive and disease resistant pepper.  It is here over a 100 years ago Giuseppe Nardiello and wife Angela grew this  pepper in the southern region of Italy.
Jimmy Nardello peppers are sweet, crisp and light when eaten raw.  Considered one of the best frying pepper.

RED CHEESE PEPPER
80 days. Candy-sweet, round, flat, 3-inch pimento-type peppers that have thick, red flesh; great for stuffing or fresh eating.  So good they are almost addictive. Very productive plants. Once used to color cheese.

There are so many more heirloom pepper seed varieties!

The Wonderful World of Heirloom Seeds

What comes to mind when you hear "Heirloom"? Maybe Antique or family heritage...

An heirloom seed is neither a Hybrid or a GMO.

A Hybrid seed is seed produced by cross-pollinated plants. Hybrid seed production is predominant in agriculture and home gardening.

A GMO, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Back to HEIRLOOM SEEDS, or True Seeds, and let's get this party started!  I'm going to share a few of my favorites today.  Throughout the week I'll share even more unique varieties.

AMANA'S ORANGE TOMATO
80 days. A very popular heirloom vegetable! A favorite of many gardeners, large fruit with superb flavor. A great potato-leafed variety from 1885!

Beautiful yellow/orange fruit up to 1½ lbs each!

BLACKTAIL MOUNTAIN WATERMELON
70 days. One of the earliest watermelons we know of, superb for the north, but it also grows well in heat and drought. The flesh is red and deliciously sweet.
Fruit have a dark rind and weigh 8-12 lbs. each. A favorite of many gardeners across the USA.

LISTADA DE GANDIA EGGPLANT

80-90 days.  One of the most popular heirloom types; this one has 7”-long fruit that are white with lovely bright purple stripes. They are so beautiful with sweet, tender flesh. This amazing variety hails from Spain, a country that is renowned for fine food.

WINTER LUXURY PIE PUMPKIN
100 days.  This beautiful pumpkin was introduced by Johnson & Stokes in 1893. Lovely 6-lb golden fruit have white netting and are perfect for pies. In fact, this is one of the best tasting pie pumpkins you can grow; with very sweet and smooth flesh, it's a favorite of all who grow it.
Try going the homemade heirloom route by using winter squash instead of canned pumpkin in your pumpkin pies.

CHIOGGIO BEET
60 days.  These juicy beets have light red skin and beautiful rings inside, almost like a peppermint candy.  A pre-1840 Italian heirloom beet variety.  Arrived in the USA before 1865.  Flesh is tender, sweet and mild.

PURPLE JALAPENO
75 Days.  A large Jalapeno pepper that turns deep purple before maturing to red. Full Jalapeno flavor and heat; great for salsa and other Mexican foods.  Plants both productive and ornamental.

DARK PURPLE OPAL BASIL
Very uniform, all purple Italian strain.  A beautiful (sweet) and ornamental variety. Spectacular as a garnish, in salads, or for adding color to basil vinegars.
