Dear Mary,

Before we get started on all of the wonderful and educational info on Growing In Containers, we have another special announcement.

Last week when we shared the HUGE Seed Sale the response was fantastic!  So...we have decided to EXTEND THE SALE thru Friday, January 2nd!!!
(click the link above for details)

Also, remember those NEW Seed Varieties that were scheduled to ship after January 1, 2015?  They'll ship EARLY!  That means if you've already pre-ordered, your seeds will ship out today!

Excited?  So are we!!!

WHAT TO GROW IN CONTAINERS

Today we added a brand new page for GROWING tips.  It's actually several pages within one page.

As Mary's Heirloom Seeds continues to grow, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our customer's experience.

ONE of the pages includes a list of varieties that grow well in containers: CONTAINER GROWING

The list of veggies is quite extensive.  As for Herbs, I have yet to meet an herb that does not grow well in containers.  Varieties such as Peppermint and Mugwort are especially great for containers as they can become invasive.

Peppers are by far my favorite to grow in containers.  I find that the yield is greater in containers and I can manage pest much better.
Growing Tomatoes in Containers
I've even grown heirloom Tomatoes in recycled containers.  Above, I used recycled (and cleaned out) kitty litter buckets.  Simply drill holes for drainage, plant your seed or transplant your seedlings and you're ready to grow.

Stop by our new page GROWING TIPS and let us know what you think!

Plant Heirloom Seeds for VICTORY!

I have shared about VICTORY GARDEN here on several occasions.

Victory Gardens, also called War Gardens, were a product of WW1 and WW2.  From wikipedia, "They were used along with food stamps to reduce pressure on the public food supply. Around one-third of the vegetables produced by the United States came from victory gardens.[2] Besides indirectly aiding the war effort, these gardens were also considered a civil "morale booster" in that gardeners could feel empowered by their contribution of labor and rewarded by the produce grown. This made victory gardens a part of daily life on the home front.

What happened to the Grow Your Own movement?  With the influx of grocery store chains, fast foods and pre-packaged junk food society has become almost completely dependent on the corporate supply of "easy" foods.  The attitude of "why grow it when I can buy it" is obvious when you look at obesity, cancer and disease rates in this country.

Add to that the corporate takeover of family farms with their billions of gallons of toxic, cancer-causing pesticides and you have a recipe for disastrous repercussions and potential for human extinction.  A bit dramatic?  Not when you think about how fast humans are killing bees and the earth.

In the words of Bill Maher, speaking to the appointment of Michael Taylor (former Monsanto Exec) to the head of the FDA, "It's like putting Jerry Sandusky in charge of Chuck E Cheese"

Here's the video.  *There is a bit of profanity*

When you Grow Your Own YOU fight the corporate takeover of our Food.

When you Grow Your Own YOU decide to avoid toxic, cancer-causing chemicals.  YOU have a chance to make a difference by growing organic. Growing organic is healthier for the planet, for you & your family AND may save millions of bees.

Why Heirloom Seeds?
An  heirloom seed variety has been saved and passed down from generation to generation. These seeds have been carefully cultivated and are considered a great value to the recipient. Some say an heirloom variety is 50 years old or more.  Some heirloom varieties have been passed down for over 100 years and others for over 400 years.
Amana's Orange heirloom tomato
Heirloom Seeds can be very unique like the Lemon Cucumber or Romanesco Italia Broccoli and others are just like the produce you buy in the store (only tastier) like the Roma Tomato

Heirloom seeds are also Open-Pollinated.  One of the many benefits of planting Heirloom Seeds is seed saving!  Heirloom seeds have also been called "heritage seeds."  Seed saving is how farmers and horiculturist have preserved the integrity of these seed varieties for hundred of years.

Not all Heirloom Seeds are created equal.  Yes, I might be biased because we own/operate Mary's Heirloom Seeds but that's not all.  Did you know that MONSANTO also sells Heirloom Seeds thru a company called Seminis???  It's true and some of the major seed companies buy from Monsanto and then re-sell to the public.

THIS is why I educated!!!!!  ALL of our seeds at Mary's Heirloom Seeds are sourced from small, family farmers and seed growers who are dedicated to protecting the integrity and diversity of organic, heirloom seeds. ALL of our seeds are grown and harvested within the US.  ALL SEEDS that are imported are coated with a toxic chemical that is approved and required by the USDA.  Yes, even organic!

In case you're wondering, YES, I grow.  I am currently working on expanding my current garden so that we can produce enough to feed our family and more in 2015.  This might sound like a huge undertaking but it really isn't.  I have been growing in South Florida for 4 years.  Before that I helped my granny in her garden since I was a kid.  I have the experience that others do not and I am happy to help.

Are you ready to GROW in 2015?
Check out our HUGE 4-Day Seed Sale going on now.  This is a great opportunity to purchase fresh seeds and a discount.
