Adding Milkweed to Your Garden

In case you missed it...We've added MILKWEED to our growing list of seed varieties at Mary's Heirloom Seeds.

Why Milkweed?  For the Monarch Butterflies and the BEES!
Butterflies love this plant, and it provides a great food source for them! Commonly called Mexican Butterfly Weed, Blood Flower or Tropical Milkweed, these showy plants have blooms in the colors or red, orange and yellow. In addition to the butterflies being attracted to Milkweed plants, the plants are also used as a medicinal herb. The bloom season is long, lasting from early summer up until the first frost. The Tropical Milkweed herb is a tender perennial that if grown in containers can be wintered indoors for areas were there are freezing temperatures.

Another NEW addition is ENGLISH LAVENDER!
Sweetly fragrant blooms and evergreen blue-green foliage! The richest in essential oils, this is one of the most aromatic Lavender plants of them all. Reaching 24 to 36 inches high, it boasts 2 1/2 inch, linear, downy leaves on strong stems. The leaves first open white, then turn a pale gray-blue-green color.
Stalks of tiny purple flowers grow up to 14 inches tall. Start this beautiful herb for your garden by sowing Lavender seeds!

I love your post, Mary. Hooray for milkweed! My Dad used to grow it like crazy. He even raised Monarch butterflies for us in a re-purposed fish tank. What a thrill!

And lavender? My absolute favorite herb...maybe I should write a blog on the simple technique of making lavender sachets? Thanks for your lovely photos!

Thanks Mary for your article about planting milkweed for the Monarch Butterfly and bees. Many people still are not aware of the situation and your article sure helps! Is it my imagination or did you recently change your template?
