Did you know that each ingredient (conventional or pre-packaged) "on your table" has traveled an average of 1,500 miles?!? When I shot at the Farmer's Market the food has come a few hundred miles. I am fortunate to live in a warm climate. It has been unusually cold the last 2 weeks but our highs have been in the 70s and our lows in the 50s.

I didn't write it down so I'm only listing the price I remember.
FM=Farmer's Market GS=Grocery Store
Tomatoes:
FM- $.80 per pound!!! GS $3.99 per pound
Red Onions:
FM $.80 per pound GS $1.99 per pound
Celery
FM $1 per head GS $1.99 each
Red Potatoes
FM $1 per pound GS $2.50 per pound
These are just a few example of what I purchased and how much I saved, PLUS most of the items are locally grown!

That is definitely one thing I miss about living in Pa ... there were so many farmers markets so close to us. Unfortunately where we live now there isn't any very close at all so all my savings would be drowned by the gas to get there. Boo :(

I have never thought about the miles on a product, but you're right, the majority of them must have a ton. Yet another reason to support local farmers when shopping.
Didn't realize Farmer's Markets were known for such low prices! And so much healthier, too. :)

I love farmer's markets. We have one a couple of miles down the road and we love to go there and buy our fruit and veg. They even allow you to pick your own!
