What is a GMO? Why is it Important?

What is a GMO?
Mary's Heirloom SeedsNovember   2013
Dear Mary,

People often ask how I got started with heirloom seeds and where I find all of the info on GMOs.  My answer is simple:
About 6 years ago I made a decision to live healthier and that meant learning more about the food I was eating, the chemicals that were used in conventional farming as well as processed foods.  That lead me to GMOs and their disastrous effects on the human body AND our environment.  My husband and I created  Mary's Heirloom Seeds to offer a trusted source for non-GMO, heirloom seeds as well as detailed growing information.

I will no longer refer to GMOs as Genetically "Modified" Organisms.
"Modified" implies that it might be an improvement.
They will now be referred to as GENETICALLY MUTATED ORGANISMS.

What is a GMO?
GMOs "genetically modified organisms," are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.  -from  Non-GMO Project

What are the potential Side Effects of GMOs?
It is important to understand the process of creating a Genetically Mutated Organism.   Example:  Corn - There are two main varieties of GE corn. One has a Gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis inserted to produce the Bt toxin, which poisons Lepidoteran (moths and butterflies) pests.[2] There are also several events which are resistant to various herbicide. Present in high fructose corn syrup and glucose/fructose which is prevalent in a wide variety of foods in America. source

GMOs are created so that when they are DRENCHED in Poison (pesticides) the crop lives but the bugs and weeds die.
A new study shows that low doses of Bt biopesticide CryA1b as well as the glyphosate herbicide, Roundup, kill human kidney cells. source

GMOs are not safe. They have been linked to thousands of toxic and allergenic reactions, thousands of sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals. source

We recently started offering Workshops to help people grow their own and avoid harmful chemicals in their garden.   The next event is Thursday, November 6th @ 6:30pm

If you're in the area and you'd like to attend another event, we have a workshop scheduled Thursday, November 14th @6:30pm

If you don't live in the area...Not to worry!  I am working on making several videos and will share them via our e-newsletter as soon as they are available.

Education is the key so that people are aware of the many #health risks of GMO not to mention the environmental hazards. I agree with Aaron that I believe eventually people will see the dangers of GMO's. I have seen a big difference even in the last year of how many people are joining in the movement against GMO. Have a great day Mary!

I'm just starting to understand GMOs. There is quite a bit about them in the book Wheat Belly. Sure seems like it all comes down to the companies wanting to make more money, regardless of the tactics.

I and my partner chose to follow a organic healthy lifestyle a few years ago to. Like you we just couldn't justify a reason to keep eating the poisoned and modified foods that we get exposed to normally. We grow our own veges and try to eat and buy only organic produce which is not easy given where we live.

Happily for us we found a very good place online that has a wide variety of foods and other products that pretty much covers our needs outside what we produce ourselves and also delivers to us. If you haven't heard of live superfoods then they are worth having a look at, we did a brief rundown on them at http://homeshoporganic.com/ if anyone is interested.

I always try to buy heirloom seeds in SA because of this very reason. I have read that there is almost no maize seed left now that is not GMO, causing all kinds of health problems. Quite scary!
